Beaulieu Riverside walk on Saturday afternoon

Sunny Saturday afternoon, it would be shame to stay at home. So after quick lunch we decide to go to Beaulieu – small picturesque village located in the New Forest national park in England. The village is home for 13th century Palace House (open to the public) and famous National Motor Museum (that we already visited last year). The name “Beaulieu” is French, meaning “beautiful place”.

To fully enjoy sunny day, we are taking the  miles footpath between Beaulieu and Buckler’s Hard. We leave our car on free car park in Motor Museum, then we take short walk to Beaulieu centre. On the way we pass ponies, donkeys and we can see Palace House, which overlooks the village from across Beaulieu River. We are looking for the Fire Station and sign next to it, showing the start point of footpath to Buckler’s Hard.

The route passes through woodland and  river-edge grassland. You can choose to walk on easier gravel track or riverbank path (it might be a bit muddy). We take turn to muddy and more adventurous path. Fresh air, beautiful views, singing birds and pretty wild flowers – I don’t need to ask for anything else today.

Suddenly we realise that we are already in the 18th century ship building village where some of Nelson’s Trafalgar fleet were built, notably Agamemnon. Up to the right it is the village itself with Buckler’s Hard Museum and a pub. Today we just eat snacks and relax on the bench. But we will be back here on summer to take boat trip on the river and have a proper picnic on the grass.
